Created through everyday life and passed down from person to person, the spirit behind crafting objects lives on today in time-tested techniques and gentle forms. The Kumamoto Handicrafts Promotion Center promotes traditional crafts in order to keep the value in making things by hand. During the Edo period, when shipping and sea trade thrived, Kawashiri was the Kumamoto Clan’s gateway to the sea.This led to local handicraft traditions that persist to the present day. The Kumamoto Handicrafts Promotion Center is a Kawashiri tourist attraction that holds demonstrations and workshops on the making of traditional crafts, exhibitions and sales of craft products and a variety of traditional crafting classes. Everyone is invited to exercise their creativity and make a handcrafted piece at the Kumamoto Handicrafts Promotion Center.
